Why I Thank God for Every Sunlit Morning

This morning I woke up to a beautiful day and thanked God for it. When I opened the kitchen blinds and saw the sunshine, I thanked Him again. Then it hit me. I needed to thank God for the gift of sight itself, not just the pretty morning. Sight is something most of us carry every single day, so we forget it was ever a gift at all.

What Made Me Stop and Notice the Light This Morning?
It started as an ordinary morning. I woke up thankful for a new day, the way I try to every morning. Then I walked into the kitchen and opened the blinds. The sunshine outside was so beautiful that I stopped and thanked God again, right there at the window. I kept thinking about that light long after I turned away from the glass. Something about it wouldn't let me go.

Why Do I Think of Sight as a Gift, Not Just a Sense?
The more I thought about that sunlight, the more I realized what I was actually thanking God for. It wasn't only the pretty morning. It was my sight. I get to see mornings like that one almost every day of my life. Most of us do, and because it happens so often, we stop noticing it's a gift at all. Not everyone gets to see a sunrise, a face, or a field of light through a kitchen window. I don't want to take that for granted again.

How Does My Faith Show Up in My Painting?
My faith and my painting aren't separate things for me. God gave me sight, and then He gave me a way to use it, the ability to take what I see and turn it into something on canvas. Every painting I finish starts with looking, really looking, at something ordinary until it stops feeling ordinary. I believe that kind of looking is a gift too, layered on top of the gift of sight itself.

What Does It Mean to Create With a Gift You Didn't Earn?
I didn't earn my eyes, and I didn't earn the ability to notice light the way I do. Both were given to me. That changes how I feel about painting. It's not just a skill I built on my own, though I've worked hard at it. It's a gift I get to use, morning after morning, and I think the most honest thing I can do with it is keep showing up and creating.

How Can Noticing the Light Change an Ordinary Morning?
That one moment at the kitchen window changed the rest of my day. I moved slower for a while, still thinking about how much I have that I never earned and rarely thank God for directly. I hope this post does the same for someone reading it. The next time the sun hits your kitchen window, I hope you stop long enough to really see it, and to feel thankful that you can.
